COCO’S 12 WEEK BURLESQUE PERFORMANCE COURSE

A LOVE LETTER TO YOU …

Hello darlings! Come and take a deep dive with me into the world of burlesque. This 12 week immersive performance course is designed to take you from the rich history and foundations of the art form all the way to creating and performing your very own burlesque act.

Over the 12 weeks, you’ll explore the many elements that make a burlesque performer: movement, musicality, costume, makeup, character, confidence and, of course, the art of tease.

This isn’t simply a dance course. It’s an opportunity to discover your own performance style and learn how to build an act from the ground up, bringing together everything you learn along the way.

By the end of the course, you’ll take to the stage in an intimate showcase for friends and family, performing your own original solo act alongside two show-stopping group numbers created and rehearsed throughout the course.

What We’ll Explore

Week 1 — The History & Art of Burlesque

We begin by delving into the rich and rebellious history of burlesque: where it came from, how it evolved and the performers and eras that helped shape the art form we know today.

We’ll explore what actually makes something burlesque, the meaning behind the art of tease, and how sensuality, comedy, glamour, character and storytelling have all played their part throughout its history.

This will also begin to inspire the world you might want to create for your own act.

Week 2 — The Showgirl: Makeup, Glamour & Persona

Discover the transformative power of showgirl makeup and learn techniques for creating a face designed for the stage.

We’ll explore how makeup can enhance your features under performance lighting, how to create classic burlesque glamour and, importantly, how your visual choices can help communicate your burlesque persona.

Week 3 — Costume, Reveal & the Art of Removal

A burlesque costume isn’t simply something beautiful to wear… it becomes part of the choreography.

You’ll explore the foundations of burlesque costuming and learn how to think about layers, reveals and removals when creating an act.

We’ll experiment with removal techniques and explore how a glove, stocking, robe or other costume piece can become a moment of performance in itself.

You’ll then begin thinking about how to create or adapt the costume for your own final act.

Weeks 4–8 — Building Your Burlesque Vocabulary

Now we begin bringing everything together.

Each week, we’ll explore dance and performance techniques inspired by different periods of burlesque, cabaret and showgirl history, giving you a broad vocabulary from which to create your own performance style.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Walk, pose and perform confidently in heels

  • Explore classic cabaret and burlesque dance steps

  • Work with props including gloves, boas, fans

  • Develop elegant lines, poses and transitions

  • Use musicality, rhythm and stillness

  • Understand pacing and anticipation

  • Use eye contact and audience connection

  • Explore sensuality without rushing

  • Develop your own burlesque persona

  • Build confidence and stage presence

  • Turn a simple movement into a moment of tease

Alongside learning these techniques, you’ll begin developing your own original burlesque act.

Rather than being given a formula to follow, you’ll be encouraged to glean from everything you’ve learnt — history, character, makeup, costume, dance, prop work and tease… and discover what feels most authentically you.

Weeks 9–12 — Creating, Refining & Performing Your Act

As we approach the showcase, our attention turns towards refining your individual performance.

With Coco’s guidance and feedback from the group, you’ll work on the details that transform an idea into a polished act: choreography, musicality, character, costume, makeup, reveals, transitions and stage presence.

We’ll look at what your act is communicating, where moments need more space, where the tease can be heightened and how you can make every movement feel intentional.

Your costume and makeup will be refined alongside the performance itself so that, by the final week, all of the elements work together to create one complete burlesque world.

Two Group Numbers

Throughout all 12 weeks, you’ll also be learning and rehearsing two choreographed group numbers.

These give you the opportunity to experience another essential side of cabaret performance: dancing as part of an ensemble, working with formations, developing musicality and learning how to maintain your individual presence while moving as part of a group.

The Final Showcase

At the end of our 12 weeks together, it’s time to step onto the stage.

You’ll perform your original solo burlesque act alongside the two group numbers you’ve learnt throughout the course in an intimate showcase for your friends and family. The date for the showcase will be agreed amongst the group and venue to make sure we are all available.

The course is designed to give you more than choreography to memorise. By the end, you’ll understand how a burlesque act is actually created — and you’ll leave with the skills, confidence and performance vocabulary to continue creating long after the course has finished.

Photographer & Videographer

Additional costs for a photographer and videographer at the showcase are optional and will be calculated based on numbers. Anyone who does not wish to be included in any documentation can opt out.
